In the dressing room – Big W

July 24, 2012 Fashion In The Dressing Room Outfits

I have to admit, lately I’ve found the plus size section of Big W boring. It had been drab & dreary, clothing to cover, not enhance. So I was quite pleasantly surprised when I checked out my local store today to find a selection of amazing coloured pants, printed leggings and a colour block ponte pencil skirt.

The cobalt blue and bright red pants.

They still have a way to go, but it was a step in the right direction. I forgot to look what sizes they go up to, but I know that they came in sizes 18-26. I picked up two pairs of the bright pink jeans to try on, and give you an idea of what they are like.

First off, I’d like to mention, I don’t wear pants often, as I have a bit of what is referred to as an ‘apron of fat’ and think pants tend to look weird on me.

I tried on both the size 20 and 22, both fit quite well. (Pictures shown are of me in the 22) The 20 being a little more snug of course, but still comfortable. The material is thin to medium, not a heavy fabric at all, but for $25 I wouldn’t expect something fantastic. The material has stretch to it, the legs seemed to be a bit more of straight leg then a skinny leg.

For $25, I would have bought them, if they’d looked any good on me, as it stands, I only own like 3 pairs of pants cause they just aren’t me. I also tried on the ponte skirt that is in the picture above, while I liked it, it was a bit too clingy for my liking and I tend to go for more flouncy skirts then pencil.

These leggings were AMAZING and i’m kind of kicking myself that I didn’t pick them up. The size 18 was super strectchy and I think may have even been a bit too big on me, but I didn’t try them on as i’m trying to save money for the move. So these would be perfect for anyone that is a size 20+. I wouldn’t be surprised if the 26 would fit someone who is a size 28, maybe even 30. The grey leopard print you can see next to the abstract print, was also available in the normal leopard browny/goldy colour way. $14.98.

A selection of the range. Those are the pink pants I tried on. A really amazing pink, I actually gasped when I saw them, to which a lady passed me by and said “I had the same reaction when I found them too”. She tried them on in the red and blue.

Are you digging the coloured jean trend?

I’m really impressed with Big W’s range lately, especially compared to Kmart. I love those pants, I have a pair in blue and berry, and am considering the red. I wear the size 26, which fits more like a 24. I also picked up some cute stripy long sleeve tops for $8 which I’ve been layering under stuff.

Digging the coloured jeans and the pencil skirts this season. I HAVE TO get my hands on that panelled skirt. I also might get in store and try on the jeans. I’ve tried just about every other brands offering. So it’s only fair. I did try the plum in the jeans before this one and they were a terrible cut {for me}. I’ve steered clear since for my own vanity’s sake. 😉

Yay! I always try to pop in stores I don’t often look at, just in case, it was probably a little sad how excited I got when I found these!

I’m really loving the coloured jeans, even though I don’t wear them often, I have a green and a pale purple. The skirt was great but i’m trying to save so i’ve been SO picky. The jeans didn’t sit right on me, but I think thats because pants just don’t sit right on me.

I’ve not really been hit by anything amazing at Kmart, well, not in the bigger sizes, there were a couple of the straight sized things that I liked. Then again, I only go to k-mart maybe once a month at most. I was really impressed with Big W though! They seem to be dropping prices like Kmart have too.

I’ve not seen much i’ve liked in the plus size section of kmart lately, I don’t go often, but they seem to be very oversized blah tunics. I love that bright colours are in and that they are doing them in plus sizes, it’s good to see. They have great tops, I have a couple, I tend to buy tops like that and cheap leggings to sleep in in winter 😛

Cute post Natalie! I’d never think to check out Big W for seasonal trends but I totally will now 🙂
In response to the ‘apron of fat’ you speak of – I’ve no idea if there’s a proper name for that (I bet there is) but I call it my “smiley face” — as in, draw a couple o’ eyes on my waist and I could probably give her a name! But yes that is the WORST for jeans sometimes! Particularly anything high-waisted. Can be so off-putting. On a confident day though, with the right pair, I don’t think it matters in the slightest. I try to own it in a kind of Gisela Ramirez way haha! But it’s definitely not worth worrying about. The right pair of bottoms, well fitted and with feminine lines, even with ‘the apron’, the way I see it they’ll still look way way better on you than they would on a less shapely woman. Sometimes they may not feel like the right curves, but bless them they are curves all the same and a proper bum and thighs, even with a belly, show off the best bits of being a woman. Sorry for the essay, I know you don’t need any tips on confidence (you’re already aces in that department), but my point is – try it sometime! You might surprise yourself. My best pair of jeans make me feel sexier than any skirt I own xx

I adore coloured jeans. I have dark green, red, neon pink & purple jeans. I really want some mint green ones too.

Oh and I have the same stomach problem as you. Mostly it doesn’t bother me in trousers too much, but yeah skinny jeans especially can be hard to buy if you don’t want to highlight that part of your stomach.

Thank you Emily! I totally agree with what you’re saying. I think it depends on what day it is for me, some days I fully embrace it, and I will wear what I want, I have two pairs of jeans already that fit similar and that I wear and it doesn’t bother me. Then on other days, it’s one of my weak areas. That and my arms are both areas i’m learning to love fully, but I guess some days are better then others. I think that is part of the reason why I don’t wear pants often, I think it’s also just because i’m so used to dressed and skirts that that is what I feel more comfortable in. I think that it does make it harder for me to find pants that I like, not just because of my ‘smiley face’ (which is an awesome name for it!) showing, but because it makes other areas not fit as well. To fit my waist, it may make the legs too baggy or weird looking. But thank you again for this comment, sometimes it’s good to be reminded that I need to embrace every part of myself.

Oh, I’m loving mint at the moment!
I understand, i’m a bit the same, but as I explained in the comment below, sometimes it’s not so much that it’s showing, more that it makes other areas of the pants not fit as well.

Ah, yeah I get that. Fit is a big problem with me and my mother. We have this problem as we have no hips, so if the waist fits, the hip area is huge then the legs are either too baggy or just fit bizarrely. Its weird, you’d think finding trousers that fit wouldn’t be that hard. :/

I have the same belly issue as you plus super thin legs so no pair of skinny jeans is ever going to be skinny on me! I don’t really like pants anyway so it’s not such a big deal. I love shorts though and wear them winter or summer 🙂

Whatever happened to the Elasticated waisted jeans with the label EXPRESSIONS size 26 that were my favourites to buy. I am lost to find any similar . The new label in store apart from having a boring range, do not deliver quality. Also, does every top have to have low slung necklines. I have scarring issues and would love to have a trendy top with a modest neckline.
