The PEDIGREE Adoption Drive – My Story & OotD!

Animals are a huge passion of mine. I will go as far as to say that I like animals more than I like humans. It’s a hard fact, but it’s true. My two dogs are my children. Frodo is my best friend and has helped me through some of the hardest times I’ve faced.

The startling fact is that every year over 100,000 homeless dogs are ‘put down’. I’ve been lucky enough to share many years with an adoption dog. He was the most beautiful amazing dog. Pedigree is also donating a bowl of dog food for each person who “Like” their Facebook page.

I don’t remember how old I was, I was still in Primary School, when my parents decided to go to our local shelter. We walked around, looking at all the animals, and I wanted to take every single one home with me. After we walked out, my Mum said to my Dad “I’m in love with the giant black dog”. I think my Dad thought she was a little nuts, for as long as I remember, we’ve only ever had small dogs!

We went back inside. The dog was a 2 year old, badly fed, abused, Border Collie X Newfoundland. He was a giant big mass of black fur. After meeting him, we decided to adopt him. The pound didn’t think he’d be adopted out, so we had to wait a few days for him to be neutered before we could bring him home. When we did, he sat on my Mum’s lap all the way home! We named him ‘King’.

At the time, I had a Maltese x Aussie Silky Terrier. His name was ‘Prince’ (I’m a huge Prince fan, from a young age!) I remember being amused the first time we introduced them. King was so scared of the little dog, who was a little bigger then the size of his head! They soon became best friends.

King, being part Newfie, LOVED water. In summer we had one of those kiddy shells filled with water that he’d lay in for hours. One winter, my Dad went out the back only to find him in our swimming pool! Shocked, Dad jumped straight into the freezing water to try and ‘save’ King, only to have him swim over to the ledge and jump out. Mind you, his swimming adventures also ended in having to get a new pool as he tore the lining in our original one!

As I mentioned, he’d been abused, it took him a long time to trust males, always preferring female company. With patience, he grew to love the males around him and trust them. King and I would dance together, at that age, I was the perfect height for him to stand up and put his paws on my shoulder.

I was always in awe of King, I think the name suited him. He was the first large dog I’d ever had a lot of interaction with. His temperament and beauty really befitted him. He was amazing.

In the end, we had to have King put down. He was around 11 and grew very ill. It was the only thing left for him. It was sad, but it was something that needed to be done. I don’t believe in keeping a sick animal alive just because I will miss them. He had a rough start to life, but he lived the rest of his years being loved.

 Of course, seeing as I’m at the legal limit of dogs in one household, I thought I’d celebrate my lovely dogs! June 4th was ‘Yellow Dog Day’, and even though I’m a few days late, I thought I’d go with the colour scheme anyway. I don’t own much yellow!
